When I moved into this apartment in Yarmouth, I was given the same phone number as the previous tenants. For months I got their calls to "pick up the lumba' you wanted" (that's Mainer for "lumber"), visit Grandma, etc. But I still get their sales calls, including messages on the answering machine (an FTC no-no, incidentally) saying I've already won a discounted vacation to Disney World, yadda yadda yadda...

But now, the US Government's Nationwide Do-Not-Call List is ready to take your numbers, and potentially put an end to cold-calling (making it illegal and punishable by fine to call someone on the list).

Of course, /. posted the links first thing this morning, so the site is being hammered. And it looks like those govenment dingbats made the web site on Windoze and IIS, so there's no chance it will be stable or safe. So if you want to register soon, first check to see if your state has its own list and register there instead.

By the way, if you hadn't heard I'm looking for a job again as of the beginning of July (like just about everyone else I know). I'd prefer something permanent this time, instead of the shorter contracts I've been doing, but whatever...

So if you have any suggestions, please email me ( e [at] ewall [dot] org ).

So ewall.org is back up, and in the few bits of random content here I haven't yet said anything about Married Life. If you're a friend—or a stranger who mysteriously discovered my site and persists in reading it—you're probably looking for news about Ainsley and I since last seen at our wedding. So am I... er, no, j/k!

In summary: We are absolutely loving married life! Read on for more detail (some details, that is!).

Another link from recent /. posting that may be of interest to you non-techie folks, on a topic that I've done some thinking and reading and chatting about: autism, idiot savants, and the brain. Here's the NYT Magazine article (free registration, yadda, yadda) entitled "Savant for a day".

Yes folks, Unisys' silly patent on the LZW compression method used in Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) files expires today! (Yes, that Unisys, the ones who take credit for The Age of Computers and anything else they can think of.)

In a great, heaving effort to get this new website up with some real content, I've spent some time the last couple of days adding to the Web Links section with a ton of bookmarks that I use at work (and at play).

If subjects like "Repackaging for Windows Installer" and "Web Development" interest you, check it out. And feel free to suggest some of your own faves in those categories, too.
